Daily Fetch 6.30.10: Today’s WTF Story…
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010
San Jose’s new Independent Police Auditor has a new idea: bringing residents face-to-face with police officers’ by whom they feel like they’ve been treated poorly. Apparently in other cities like DC and New York City, this approach of mediating disputes between residents and officers is in place and apparently works. Of course, officers need to agree to it, so we’ll see if the idea has legs… Remember, they are not big fans of IPA LaDoris Cordell…
The famously non-San Jose-based company Tesla went public yesterday, which was a very good day for Tesla (and for Fremont)…
In an interesting (and ironic?) juxtoposition, Sharon Noguchi writes this story for the Merc in today’s paper: More California schools may not be able to pay bills, state reports. At least local school bond and parcel tax measures this fall won’t have to compete with the state’s $11.1 billion water bond for ballot attention, because the Governor pulled the measure for this November’s ballot.
It turns out the Willow Glen home invasion was (apparently) not random, according to police. The family was targeted, perhaps because of “…a trio of luxury automobiles parked outside…” The Daily Fetch doesn’t want to speculate on anything, but the details as laid out in today’s story sound interesting, to say the least. We learn that the family who was tied up and robbed had three luxury cars, had just sold a car for cash and had the cash stolen, and that the father was hung over from watching soccer… are these things we need to know about this story?
There seems to be some disagreement in Mountain View about whether or not to outsource the City’s golf course. The Daily Fetch just likes the “optics” of a city in financial distress arguing about a golf course…
To South County…
Gilroy reached a deal with their firefighter unions and it includes a two-tier pension… (You read that right…)
Those of you who are big fans of the former Granada Theater in downtown Morgan Hill may want to push the Morgan Hill City Council to put a Save the Granada ballot measure on the November ballot…
We end with today’s WTF Story…
The District Attorney said in February that in June she would have an update on the investigation into the Mexican American Community Services Agency (MACSA), the organization accused of skimming money from teachers’ pensions from their now shut-down charter schools. But now we learn from the Gilroy Dispatch that a year isn’t long enough to investigate, apparently. Tick tock. Why is this important? Read this and this. Why is this a political decision? Read this. It is no wonder we are getting a new DA in January…
Daily Fetch 6.30.10: Cohen vs Foust – Round 3
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010
The Andy Cohen (Menlo Park) versus Rosanne Foust battle spilled onto the pages of the Almanac yesterday afternoon. Redwood City Councilmember/SAMCED Executive Foust is pretty pissed at Councilmember Cohen, especially because he didn’t call her before filing his complaint with the Fair Political Practices Commission… She is confident that the FPPC will see her dual roll as no conflict at all. For her sake, we hope she’s right…
There is, perhaps, a new site for the new jail, according to Sheriff Monks, and it won’t screw up Redwood City’s downtown… Perhaps Davies Public Affairs has been doing their job…
And to pay for the new jail… the Board of Supervisors are asking voters (50 percent of them anyway) to pass a new sales tax to help get rid of the County’s “structural deficit“. Now-Elected Supervisor Carole Groom was the only cooler-head in the room casting the lone dissenting vote… (By the way, we are just kidding about the tax paying for the new jail.)
But the new tax might go to pay for healthcare for some folks who some other folks believe shouldn’t get it… Taking us inside of this issue is John Horgan at the County Times. He delves into a recent Civil Grand Jury report questioning the County’s health coverage of illegal immigrants. (Some Fetch readers will be pleased to see us aggregating this story…)
Belmont is the new Sacramento… they decided to start their fiscal year tomorrow without a budget because deals with their unions are not finalized yet. Perhaps Jerry Hill and Ira Ruskin could come back and provide some insight into how to start a fiscal year without a budget…
The pair of Psych Ward sexual assault perpetrators had their day in court yesterday… one pleaded no contest and one was found incompetent for trial.
Could the budget axe fall on Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA? Perhaps. Each city in the County pays part of the $5 million per year contract and times are tough…
If you ever stay in one of the six hotels in Pacifica, if a measure passes in November you could be paying 2 percent more in the “transient occupancy tax“. It is currently 10 percent but the Pacifica City Council would like to increase it to help out their bottom line…
And finally this:
We’d hate to see a week go by without an anti-High-Speed Rail piece on Burlingame Voice… It is now “Part 20” in the eternal book of High-Speed Rail Hating…
Daily Fetch 6.29.10: IPO likes it 1999…
Tuesday, June 29th, 2010
Remember when everyone was jumping on the IPO bandwagon… well, it ain’t 1999 anymore, so when Tesla rang the bell today, expect some people to get really rich… or maybe not… Ironically, the only folks who are lucky enough to get in on IPOs are the same folks who can afford a $100,000 car. (Don’t forget to check out all our Tesla Chronicles from yesteryear…)The “Final-Final” vote on San Jose’s City budget will happen today, according to Councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio on San Jose Inside…
And the San Jose Police Officers’ Association ties a recent shooting downtown to budget cuts on their blog by saying,
San Jose State owned some bequethed land in South San Jose… which they sold this week to the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority to be part of the Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve…
Palo Alto had its own budget discussion last night and passed their 2010-11 budget…
While San Carlos up north looks to outsource their police department, Palo Alto and Mountain View look to outsource their golf courses…
In a Merc Op-Ed, Santa Clara & San Benito Counties Building and Construction Trades Council Neil Struthers bashes a nonunion training and apprenticeship program.
The Mercury News Editorial Board would like you to vote for the Rose Garden in the contest for America’s Best Rose Garden… and the Merc’s election endorsement means something — just ask Don Rocha, Magdalena Carrasco, and the 49ers… (but don’t ask Teresa Alvarado…)
If you want to know what is happening in Sunnyvale, click on over to Dweeb.org and Councilmember Jim Griffith’s blog. Ironically, they will have a long study session today about “…working to increase the efficiency of Council meetings…”
Here’s a summertime story for you from the Merc: Man arrested for groping girls in Great America pool. Perhaps it was a USA Swimming coach…
Daily Fetch 6.29.10: Cohen vs. Foust/Hartnett – Round 2
Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

We’ll start with the inside baseballs stuff today… Remember that Menlo Park Councilmember Andy Cohen filed an ethics complaint against Redwood City Councilmember/ SAMCEDA executive Rosanne Foust over the Cargill Saltworks project… well, former Redwood City Councilmember Jim Hartnett fires back today in the Daily Journal. Hartnett does some digging and finds that Cohen is apparently a fan of Lyndon LaRouche… (The Daily Fetch doesn’t need to do any digging to note that Hartnett and Foust are married.)
While we are in the “Letters” section of the Daily Journal, San Carlos Councilmember Matt Grocott takes on a constituent who wrote in last week complaining about salary and benefits of San Carlos employees. Perhaps it is that deft political touch that proved so beneficial in the Supervisor’s race for Grocott…
Today will be a busy one at the County government building… Supervisors will consider the Charter Review Committee recommendations elections, among other things. Tomorrow’s news could include a bunch more things on the ballot. (Thank you Coastsider… and Bruce Balshone…)
It was a busy day in San Carlos Monday: They voted to begin negotiating with the Sheriff’s office to outsource their police department… and folks in San Carlos’ management union will be getting paid slightly less…
Belmont is following the City of San Jose’s lead and cutting it very close with their budget passage… expect it today with some union concessions…
The County’s budget will see a cut to the summer meal program for kids…
One way to deal with the budget is to hike fees (just ask Menlo Park about their garbage rates…) Today’s rate hike news come from the Coastside County Water District. 14 percent.
Menlo Parkians will voting on the Bohannon Project this November, but it is a much smaller project (26 residential units) that had folks all worried last night. Old neighbors apparently don’t want new neighbors in Menlo Park… that sounds about right.
Speaking of Menlo Park… or at least the folks there that drive fancy electric cars…
Remember when everyone was jumping on the IPO bandwagon… well, it ain’t 1999 anymore, so when Tesla rings the bell today, expect some people to get really rich… or maybe not… Ironically, the only folks who are lucky enough to get in on IPOs are the same folks who can afford a $100,000 car.
Daily Fetch 6.28.10: A Menlo Park/Redwood City Fence?
Monday, June 28th, 2010
Usually, it is NIMBY-esque arguments against High-Speed Rail on the Peninsula… but add Putnam car dealerships to the list in Burlingame.
We all know the story of the Marchi’s Central Farm labor camp and how it was found to have contained E coli in the drinking water. Well, it turns out the County should have avoided ths situation all together by enforcing its own rules and regulations… but it didn’t…
If good fences make good neighbors, then perhaps Redwood City and Menlo Park should be building a fence, because right now they are not being such good neighbors. We know that Menlo Park does not like the idea of the Cargill Saltworks development. But Menlo Park Councilmember Andy Cohen went one step further and just filed a complaint with the California Fair Political Practices Commission charging that Redwood City Councilmember Rosanne Foust has a conflict of interest whenever she votes on Cargill matters because of her role as the President and CEO of the San Mateo County Economic Development Association… That’s heavy duty stuff.
You have to give it Shaun Bishop at the Daily News… he apparently has been asking questions about how $310,000 which was to be spent by Redwood City on a consultant to make sure the County didn’t site their new jail in downtown Redwood City… or more precisely, what has Davies Public Affairs been doing for all that money. It looks like not much. There was a website up for a day, but that came down. Remember when this story first came out, we pointed out that on Davies Public Affairs own website, they write: Davies makes NIMBYs and naysayers irrelevant… They should be more worried about Shaun Bishop these days than NIMBYs and naysayers…
Tonight, San Carlos may take another big step forward in outsourcing their police department to either the Sheriff or to Redwood City’s Police Department. A consultant that San Carlos hired says Go For It…
As some School Districts and Cities are getting their campaigns for parcel taxes and other ballot measures ready for November, the San Mateo Union High School District is just now hiring a pollster and seeing about options for November. The deadline to get something on the November ballot is August 6th…
And taxes won’t be the only thing on the ballot… the County will probably have some Charter Review stuff on their too, including (maybe) district elections, the special election versus appointment issue, makinmg the treasurer-tax collector an appointed position and perhaps other stuff too…
Brisbane has a new police chief, and she was born in Brisbane…
A new school will open in the Redwood Shores Elementary School District. In August, we’ll all be able to see what $25 million can buy…
From one public building to another… the Edgewood youth center in San Bruno was burned last year but re-opened this week…
Finally, we end in with water rate hikes… water rate hikes coming to Daly City…
Daily Fetch 6.28.10: Two Teir Pensions Monday?
Monday, June 28th, 2010
Here’s a headline for you: City, fire union reach deal to lower staffing, divide pensions into two tiers. Of course, that headline isn’t from the Mercury News and isn’t about San Jose. Instead, it is from the Gilroy Dispatch and about Gilroy.
If you build it, they will come apparently. The building is the San Jose (International) Airport and the “they” is Alaska Air’s new flight between SJC and Kauai… Congrats…
And if you need to cut it, you can probably outsource it… that’s whats happening in San Jose. City janitors may be outsourced next…
Fighting back on budget cuts to libraries, Randi Kinman, the founder of the Friends of Bascom Library, talks about the City, the budget, and the libraries in a Merc Op-Ed…
As the San Francisco 49ers pack their bags and head to Santa Clara, they still have to play in a crappy stadium for a few more years… and they would like the City and County of San Francisco to do at least a little clean up of Candlestick – or at least get a break in rent. Last week they sent a letter to San Francisco asking for a litany of deferred maintenance improvements. The letter didn’t end with:
P.S. We’re leaving nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah…
But it should have…
Sunday = Internal Affairs =
- The San Jose Planning Commission cracked down on Xavier Campos (and future candidates too) for their fundraising and campaigning…
- The budget battle and personal sniping between San Jose Councilmembers Nancy Pyle and Pete Constant continued last week…
- The District Attorney’s office will be very interesting for the next 7 months as both DA-in-waiting Jeff Rosen is there while DA-in-packing Dolores Carr heads out the door…
And then IA turned their attention to an April meeting between Cindy Chavez and District 5 candidate Magdalena Carrasco’s ex-husband Kevin De Leon at the Democratic Convention in LA… of course, that story has already been reported in the Metro on June 2nd…
And this is something that will likely land in Carr/Rosen’s lap… a Willow Glen family’s home was invaded, the family was tied up, and the house was “ransacked”… expect Willow Glen to be on high alert…
Speaking of nice neighborhoods… the County Assessor Larry Stone (boooooooo….) is entering the Internet age and adding some cool new tools to the Assessor’s offerings…
And this will impact the Assessor’s office… in Mountain View, a plan to build a hotel near Google has fizzled, again. Instead, Google will expand, again…
It is graduation time, which sometimes leads big-whigs to come to town: Dunkin’ Duncan was in town this week to give a commencement address…
It seems USA Swimming took a page out of the Catholic Church’s book about how to deal with sexual assaults… by keeping them “confidential“…
Scott Herhold at the Merc looks deep into the underbelly of Saratoga politics. Actually, he commends Saratoga for being “reasonable” and thinks San Jose should import some of the “cooler heads” from there…
There was a strange and dangerous explosion near Mount Hamilton this weekend and four people were injured.
Supervisor Don Gage seems to have saved the day, even though his days as Supervisor are numbered. You may recall that the County was about to boot the San Martin Lions Club from their meeting hall, but it may not be necessary now. Thank you Supervisor Gage, from the Lions.
Daily Fetch 6.25.10: Garbage Saga… still
Friday, June 25th, 2010
Since we started our original blog, Watch Dog San Mateo, the Garbage Saga has been a favorite topic of readers (and writers too)… And another chapter is now being written in Menlo Park. Menlo Park Councilmember Heyward Robinson wants elected officials and ratepayers to be in on contract negotiations that the garbage company has with Teamsters and other unions. The bottom line seems to be that the oversight of the garbage collection and recycling is screwed up… and getting more and more expensive. As we often say, the Garbage Saga is to be continued…
The County Charter Review Committee would like to see an election to fill vacancies on the Board of Supervisors… with all due respect to Supervisor Carole Groom, of course…
The Woodside murder-for-money accused killer was due in court yesterday to enter a plea, but it was delayed until mid-July. More details about the murder victim’s life insurance policy is discussed in County Times story today… (We also get a picture of the accused in the Almanac…)
East Palo Alto is looking for a new City Manager, which is normal enough. But one of the folks on the short-list has been fired, let go, or often complained about in his previous jobs, according to a Daily News story today. That sounds about right for EPA…
While we are in EPA… We’ve known for a while that the Police Chief has been looking to get out of there. But it won’t be to Seattle. You may remember that Chief Ron Davis also didn’t get the New Orleans gig he was looking for either…
Is Burlingame becoming the San Francisco of the County? Maybe. They are thinking about a similar law as SF has about cell phone radiation emission notices…
It has been a pretty good week for the La Honda-Pescadero School District. They have had a pretty good, scandal-free run and now they about to get a chunk of cash from the Feds. That’s the good news. The not-so-good news is that the money is going to help “…188 low-achieving California schools…’
If you are interested in what happened at the Woodside Council meeting on June 22nd, read it on the Citizens of Woodside website. Of course, that universe of people who are interested in what happens at any given Woodside Council meeting is probably very, very small…
Daily Fetch 6.24.10: USA, USA, USA
Thursday, June 24th, 2010
Here is a heartwarming story to start the day: a mother in Redwood City tried to kill her family. She’ll be charged with attempted murder.
On a much more positive note, the US team won a big game in South Africa that you might have heard about. The goal came courtesy of (dreamy) former San Jose Earthquake Landon Donovan…
More budget stuff…
The County passed theirs… but don’t worry, “The reality is, come September, we’re probably going to have to do more elimintations.” according to anti-rave Supervisor Adrienne Tissier in the Daily Journal…
The budget (and pay and salaries and benefits) are at the heart of a possible teacher strike in the San Carlos Elementary School District.
Belmont has its own budget problems and a union that isn’t budging yet… however, from this story we did a little research and it seems that Belmont Vice Mayor Carolin Feierbach used to Tweet… but hasn’t kept it up after her 33 Tweet, unfortunately…
Maybe those budget problems are the root of this: a bank robbery at the Wells Fargo inside the Safeway at Sequoia Station. Something about Wells Fargo and robberies. Our friends on the other side of this blog have seen their share of Wells Fargo robberies — and weird ones at that…
Have a good day folks…
Daily Fetch 6.24.10: Thank you Mr. Donovan…
Thursday, June 24th, 2010
Thank you (former Earthquake) Landon Donovan. See you Saturday…
Well, it had to end sometime… Teresa Alvarado is the odd person out in the race for County Supervisor. (Although anyone who has met Mike Wasserman or Forrest Williams, may say that they are the odd men in the race…) The votes have been tallied: Wasserman and Williams will square off this November and the winner will join the Board of Supervisors… Perhaps we should get them on the record about bailing out their would-be colleagues’ when their would-be colleagues blow their office budgets…
Speaking of county votes… the State Senate Special Election is still too close to call, and apparently Sam Blakeslee still could avoid a run-off. Although it seems a more likely scenario that Blakeslee will face off against John Laird (again) in August…
We had one Russian leave town yesterday (Nobokov) but we had one come to town too: Dmitry Medvedev. He Tweeted and went to Cisco and tied up traffic…
There was a fire last night at Newby Island Landfill in San Jose. It was in their “outbuilding” which is apparently where they capture methane and turn it into energy. A methane fire sounds scary (and smelly)…

A $300 million face-lift at a hospital sounded expensive when we read it, but then we realized they were talking about the actual building (at Regional Medical Center)…
More Hangar One (demolition?) drama… This time Anna Eshoo would like ot know why the Navy wants to demo the “cork room“… If you have no idea what a cork room is, join the club and read the story in the Mountain View Voice…
Coyotes in Campbell? Yes. (Not those kind of Coyotes you Tea Party freak…)
Speaking of Tea Party… the families of the kids that got booted out of school in Morgan Hill for wearing American flags on Cinco de Mayo are (obviously) suing the school district. Perhaps the families and the kids couldn’t deal with the fact that the spotlight had dimmed? Perhaps they are gunning for their own show on KSFO?
