Daily Fetch 1.30.12: Michael Peevey = Not Popular

Monday, January 30th, 2012

We’ll start with a trio of healthcare-related stories…

The Peninsula Health Care District doled out $2.15 million grants

A vendor for Sequoia Hospital (accidentally) posted employees’ confidential information online. Oops…

The Kaiser Redwood City hospital had a topping ceremony last Friday. For those of you who don’t know what that is, visit a construction site sometime.

From San Bruno… sort of. The Mercury News Editorial Board does not like the PUC and especially does not like Michael Peevey, the PUC’s President. The Ed Board thinks he should be the “last person who should lead San Bruno probe…” (Jackie Speier feels the same way…)

Monday marks the end of a pretty violent weekend locally. A stabbing in SSF and a stabbing in HMB. The one in HMB followed a wedding in downtown HMB.  We doubt the happy couple registered for that at Toque Blanche

Daily Fetch 1.30.12: FanFest > Bitch@LewFest…

Monday, January 30th, 2012

Good Monday to you…

Lew Wolff had an interesting weekend. It was “FanFest” for the Oakland A’s… which turned out to be “BitchFest 2012″. Lots of complaints aimed at Lew Wolff and his counter was “Manny Ramirez… maybe”…

Remember the new (money-making, pot-club limiting) regulations that the City of San Jose was going to impose. Well, not so much. The referendum-gathering pot-heads (like Rich Robinson?) backed down the never-smoked-pot-before Mayor Chuck Reed.

This story isn’t about the 2012 San Jose pension reform ballot measure (or the 2014 San Jose Mayor’s race)… but it might as well be: High-stakes labor battle coming to California

The San Jose City budget has been a pain in the ass for elected officials and citizens alike… services being cut, etc., etc. But one bright spot is the Lake Cunningham Regional Skate Park, where citizens (and donors) have saved the place…

From our friends at Internal Affairs at the Merc… well, a redo of a story that was published by our friends at San Jose Insidethe Madison vs. Kansen dust-up

Daily Fetch 1.27.12: Only in Atherton… a $14k/month “executive coach”

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Ok Atherton, when are you going to get your small town-act together? First you have an Interim City Manager that goes out of town and doesn’t come back — causing the Police Chief to serve as the Acting Interim City Manager (or was it Interim Acting?, we forget)… Then the Interim City Manager comes back and looks like he’s going to get his job back for a while, and then yesterday we learned (and Tweeted) that the Interim City Manager is resigning… And now a 30 year old deputy city clerk is taking the helm, with the old Interim City Manager serving as “an executive coach” (for $14k per month) according to Mayor Bill Widmer. Really?

San Mateo County Sheriff’s Captain Greg Rothaus serves as San Carlos’ Police Chief… and he doesn’t like the idea of Carlos Club getting to have an outside patio for live music and the like… So the Planning Commission in San Carlos is going to study noise from Carlos Club before making a final final decision on the outside patio…

The Board of Supervisors (wisely) decided against putting a increase in the Vehicle License Fee on the ballot this year to fund parks… Former Governor Gray Davis thinks the Supervisors’ political instincts are sound…

If you are interested in what the 4 or 5 Republicans in the County think about pension reform, the Daily Journal has an Op-Ed for you. In case you don’t want to read the whole thing: “…Our Board of Supervisors has abdicated its fiduciary responsibility. This year’s budget was “balanced” by withdrawing close to $50 million from reserves to meet escalating pension liabilities. If trends continue, by 2016, the gap will be almost $80 million and county reserves will be gone…”

Back on Monday… enjoy the Pro Bowl.

Daily Fetch 1.27.12: Rob Davis takes the stand?

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Good Friday to you… Let’s see what’s going on, shall we?

Tracey Kaplan at the Merc gets a great first line into her piece today: “…Ending an era in which criminal defendants’ constitutional rights were routinely jeopardized, Santa Clara County will now offer legal representation to anyone who can’t afford an attorney at their initial court appearance…” How do you really feel about it Tracey?

Speaking of Constitutional rights being jeopardized… There is a retired San Jose Police Officer who is suing the City of San Jose “for allegedly bypassing hmi for a lieutenant’s job on at least four occasions in favor of less qualified candidates…” during his 25 year run with the Department. The case is in federal court right now. In an added twist, “The trial is expected to force current San Jose Police Chief Christopher Moore and his predecessor, Rob Davis, who is accused of specifically retaliating against Harper, to take the witness stand…” Where’s Sean Webby when you need him? (No offense, Mr. Mintz…)

Here’s some heartwarming news, a Milpitas Unified School District employee was arrested for (allegedly) lifting almost $40,000 from “study body funds“…

Joining San Jose and a growing number of other cities, Mountain View is moving forward with a plastic bag ban… much to the dismay of some local lobbyists

We’ll end with the blogs…

San Jose Inside is on its game this week:

  • First, a story about how (and why) former San Jose Police Officers’ Association President George Beattie left his position at the union and headed back to work to put in some more time to pad his pension — and now he is Bobby Lopez’s direct supervisor. Awesome.
  • Second, there’s a story about a growing rift between San Jose Councilmember Kansen Chu and Vice Mayor Madison Nguyen, including some pretty nasty (and now very public) emails between the two. Surprise, surprise, at issue is a Vietnamese flag raising ceremony and the political implications of who was there/wasn’t there…

And with all that is going on in and around San Jose, including the aforementioned story about George Beattie, Protect San Jose took another week off. In case they’ll be back next week, here’s the City Council agenda for your Council Watch

If you are interested in an interesting take on all things Santa Clara (and a good laugh), you should probably head over to Mission City Lantern

Have a good weekend…

Daily Fetch 1.26.12: Waiting for Superman… in jail

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Yesterday we learned the story about the Summit student arrested for trying to rape a teacher in a Redwood City parking lot… today we learn that his bail has been set at $1 million. He’ll be Waiting for Superman behind bars…

Take Menlo Park off of the list of folks willing to pay to keep Flood Park up and running

That’s not all that Menlo Park has decided not to do… they decided not to fund their Housing Department either

Here is a terrible (and gross) coastside headline: Dual sewage leaks contaminate Surfer’s Beach (or is it Surfers’ Beach?)…

Daily Fetch 1.26.12: Do you know a Rotarian?

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

San Jose A’s will be back in the news in the coming weeks because Lew Wolff is speaking at the San Jose Rotary meeting on February 8th… Time to call your Rotarian friend…

The City of Santa Clara is considering having City Council elections be “at-large” to increase minorities on the City Council.  Lantern?

The Sobrato’s are ponying up again for a great cause in Silicon Valley. Their name will grace the new facility at Valley Medical Center.

Here is a weird story, brought to you by Jason Green at the Daily News: Man robbed, beaten at Stanford Shopping Center after having jewelry appraised. Just when you thought it was safe to shop at Stanford…

Finally, we love the headline on this OpEd in the Merc. It’s about the SJSU students who want to increase the minimum wage in San Jose: San Jose State students need an economics class… The same could probably be said for half the San Jose City Council…

Daily Fetch 1.25.12: Some heartwarming stories to start your day…

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Here’s a heartwarming story, brought to you by Bonnie Eslinger at the Daily News: Former Menlo School baseball coach pleads not guilty to stealing student iPads… An ironic story given the other news of the day about Apple.

In even more heartwarming news… a rare bad-news story for Summit Prep. A Summit student has been put in the slammer for (allegedly?) attacking a woman in a garage near school.

To San Bruno, where it was a pretty exciting day yesterday… construction workers busted a gas pipeline. Everyone is fine…

Daily Fetch 1.25.12: 2 world leaders, 2 major speeches…

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

There were two critical speeches yesterday that will set the tone for policy and politics for our country for 2012… Obviously the President’s State of the Union got all the press, but more importantly, Board of Supervisor’s President George Shirakawa, Jr. gave his State of the County.  Only one of these world leaders shed a tear…

The most obvious news today… Cupertino’s largest employer is a very, very successful company.

Speaking of successful companies… The Santa Clara 49ers new stadium will not go to the ballot again. The Santa Clara City Council voted against going to the ballot again to get everyone in Santa Clara to give a thumbs up to the stadium…

The once-powerful, influential, and successful(?) San Jose Redevelopment Agency is about to pack up the rest of the boxes and shut down.

Cupertino’s resident loud-mouth Councilmember Barry Chang has decided to throw his hat into the ring against State Senator Joe Simitian (and Kathleen King) to run for Santa Clara County Supervisor. Apparently Chang desperately wants to serve with Supervisor Shirakawa…

Daily Fetch 1.24.12: Only in Atherton… the conspiracy grows

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

It is never a fun decision for a City Council to decide to cut down trees (see Palo Alto), but the San Carlos City Council, in a 3-2 vote, decided to do just that last night.

Speaking of wildly unpopular votes… The Board of Supervisors will join everyone else today and raise garbage/recycling rates for unincorporated areas of the County. But hey, at least the new building off 101 in San Carlos looks great.

To San Bruno, where votes for contracts to repair damage from the 2010 explosion will be voted on this week.

In Millbrae, the City Council will consider banning plastic bags… joining everyone and their mother in fighting powerful local lobbyists

We’ll end in our favorite small, over-priveleged community: Atherton. Councilmember Kathy McKeithen seems to be suggesting that another Councilmember is out to get her… the the police are circling her house for no reason… that someone is cutting her irrigation lines… and more. Because apparently no one in Atherton has anything better to do…

Daily Fetch 1.24.12: How downtown San Jose celebrates playoff football…

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

Yes, we slacked off yesterday. We had to regroup after the fumbles… but we’re back.

We hope Bud Selig didn’t see this story about what happened in downtown San Jose after a professional sporting event featuring a team from New York. A brawl… caught on video. Stay classy downtown San Jose… imagine if the Yankees played in downtown San Jose?

Speaking of the Santa Clara 49ers…

The group trying to referend a Santa Clara City Council vote about the stadium “cleared the first of three high hurdles needed…” Apparently the other two hurdles are even higher… (We know what Mission City Lantern thinks…)

That anti-stadium group will not like today’s Merc Editorial that calls for Silicon Valley leaders to rally around bringing a Super Bowl to Santa Clara… and calls out some leader specifically to make it happen (Chamber of Commerce).

More disturbing details are emerging about the kidnapping of the 11 year old girl last week that ended in the kidnapper being shot and killed by police.

A group of San Jose State students are trying to qualify an initiative to raise the minimum wage. Good luck students… perhaps you should team up with the pot club folks. That would be a great campaign headquarters to hang out at

Amazingly, Palo Alto approved a plan for 20 new cell towers… Maybe you’ll be able to talk on your cell phone in Palo Alto now.

On a final note, apparently Protect San Jose doesn’t think there is much going on during the San Jose City Council meeting this week because there is no “Council Watch”… yet. The truth is, the Council may vote to get rid of their own pension benefits. An idea that is (ironically) being pushed by someone on a City pension… Thoughts Protect?
