Daily Fetch 2.29.12: Why dip only once when you can dip twice?

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

County Supervisors punted the decision to appoint a new Controller or put it up for a special election. And that punt put the special election on June 5th out of contention… expect the Supervisors to say sometime later, “we can’t wait until November to have a new Controller…” and then pick someone they really like.

And while there was no urgency to democratically elect a new Controller, there was urgency from Supervisors to put four tax measures on the June ballot

And Supervisors weren’t done… they also reappointed interim (returning) County Manager John Maltbie for a long, long time… One year at least. Why dip only once when you can dip twice?

Daily Fetch 2.29.12: Rare Leap Day Post…

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Usually we don’t post on February 29th… but we thought we’d make an exception today…

The San Jose City Council won’t be putting any tax measures on the ballot this June. They punted the decision until after the (likely) pension reform ballot measure in June…

Santa Clara County Supervisors weren’t just talking about making the food they serve in County facilities healthier yesterday, they were also taking steps (much like San Mateo County) to curb payday lending

If ever a Merc headline described how editors of a newspaper feel about something, this one is it: All-white Santa Clara Council says no to race-driven change to elections

Have a good leap day…

Daily Fetch 2.28.12: Oh Atherton, how we love thee…

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Cell towers and small, San Mateo County cities… it is a recipe for disaster. And that’s what happened in San Carlos last night. The City Council called AT&T “bullies” and yelled and screamed, but eventually approved a new cell tower.

Oh Atherton, how we love thee… On January 27th, we wrote:

And today… when we learn that the interim City Manager will not, in fact, be an executive coach. He won’t be anything. Atherton makes Bell look well-run…

To Pacifica, where Riptide was correct, unfortunately, Councilmember Jim Vreeland has resigned from the City Council due to health problems. Leave it up to the County Times to have a small error in the posting of the story however…

While we’re in Pacifica, Riptide gives us the scoop on yesterday’s Council meeting. No sales tax measure heaading to the ballot

Daily Fetch 2.28.12: NBC thanks Chris Platten…

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

Another day another attempt to make #pensiongate stick… This time, the attorney for several City Employee unions in San Jose has filed a complaint with the SEC against Mayor Chuck Reed… But Chuck Reed is firing back. He called the filing “another bogus complaint full of misrepresentations” and “a political trick“… He should have said, “The SEC? Aren’t those the same fools who weren’t paying attention to credit default swaps?…” But Reed decided that was too geeky, even for him to say… (NBC Bay Area ought to be thanking Chris Platten for providing every ounce of their news coverage over the past several weeks…)

The Sacramento Bee’s Dan Walters also gives a shout-out (of sorts) to San Jose and San Diego for having pension reform measures heading (maybe?) to the ballot this year… as opposed to the State, which shockingly can’t get its act together.

While the City is focused on budget challenges and #pensiongate, the County Board of Supervisors is changing the way they serve food in County facilities… it will be healthier, more nutritious, and will kill you less soon… Having visited the cafeteria on West Hedding, this was a long-time coming…

Palo Alto has a new Mayor… and with a new Mayor comes a new State of the City. Mayor Yiawey Yeh delivered his speech yesterday and talked “infrastructure, renewal“… We have to wonder if cell towers falls into the category of infrastructure…

Daily Fetch 2.27.12: Pro-democracy Supervisors… a nice change

Monday, February 27th, 2012

Bucking history in favor of democracy, County Supervisors “…appear to favor letting voters rather than themselves fill the mid-term controller vacancy…” But do it quick, you might only have 2 weeks to file your paperwork…

Dr. William Ayres is “struggling to cope” up at the Napa hospital where he’s been ‘living’… Aaron Kinney has the County Times’ story, but William Ayres Watch blog has a different take…

Hey Redwood City voters, remember when you passed a tax measure to keep City services… well, some of that tax may go to raising the salaries of folks who make $207k and $101k. Have a good day.

Speaking of highly paid managers of government agencies… Supervisors would like to keep acting County Manager John Maltbie on for a while longer

How does the San Mateo County San Carlos Redwood City Fire Department sound to you? Well, it would be a mouthful, but it might actually to come to pass. (A little late for the Civil Grand Jury…) Some discussion this week, in case you have nothing else to do.

Monday is Sue Lempert’s day in the Daily Journal. Usually she talks local politics, but today she takes on Foster Friess… Which is decidedly less delicious than Fosters Freeze…

Finally, Serra High School will be naming their football stadium after Little Tommy Brady: Brady Family Stadium.

Daily Fetch 2.27.12: Ashton Kutcher and SJPD?

Monday, February 27th, 2012

It has been a big few days for Santa Clara County soon-to-be-based professional sports teams… Last week, the Earthquakes’ new stadium was approved by the San Jose Planning Commission… and then later this week:

The Santa Clara City Council will approve a lease agreement for the stadium that will generate revenue for the City, but also require construction to begin before July 4th-ish…

San Jose is preparing to approve road work to connect Coleman Avenue to Cisco Field… Note to Major League Baseball: When the City of San Jose moves faster than you do, you have a big, big problem…

And back to #pensiongate…

The Merc Editorial Board sets the stage for what will be a very, very interesting week inside San Jose City Hall… their take? Talking is good…

This isn’t so much #pensiongate as pension payment… the San Jose City Council will be talking new taxes on Tuesday. That should be fun.

Internal Affairs lets us know that someone is trying to get San Jose residents to call the San Jose City Council to have them voice their concerns over the pension reform measure to be voted on soon… except whomever is planning this advocacy effort called Rose Herrera at home to get Rose Herrera at home to call Rose Herrera at work.

Not to be left out the fun, the City of Palo Alto declared an impasse with their Police Officers union

We don’t really know what to make of this story, which we found in the San Mateo County Daily Journal… “…San Jose police Friday said actor Ashton Kutcher was present at child pornography raids in Marin County Thursday but did not enter any residences and was not involved in enforcement actions…”

We’d be little more impressed if Ashton Kutcher was riding along when this arrest was made: Hells Angel arrested in killing of fellow gang member… You remember the stories…

Daily Fetch 2.24.12: Another day of #pensiongate…

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Well, #pensiongate gets yet another day in the news, which is exactly what its proponents want. There is a big piece in the Merc about 5 San Jose City Councilmembers (you guess which ones) who are asking the San Jose Rules Committee to discuss where and how the $650 million figure came to be used… And NBC Bay Area has another piece too. Whether or not the issue has any merit, it is making news… perhaps this will cause Armando and Vic to get along to figure out how to counter… and it has certainly caused Protect San Jose to break out of their blogging shell… and in all caps at that

While we’re on San Jose’s budget, Rich Robinson on San Jose Inside does his best John McEnery IVRich is well-known for his biting satire

There is a new County Superintendent: Xavier De La Torre.  Good luck Mr. De La Torre… and beware of Board in-fighting…

Here’s something, Mountain View wants to (maybe) end:  more drive-through restaurants being created on El Camino Real. Who will line up to join them? Will Joint Venture take up the cause for their Grand Boulevard Plan?

Daily Fetch 2.24.12: Republicans are coming to town… they will Google Santorum

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Little Tommy Brady was back in town yesterday for a Serra High School fundraiser. In his talk, he spoke about how he learned about “honor, hard work, and discpline” at Serra. We wonder why one of Serra’s other well-known graduates didn’t learn the honor part…

One headline writer had fun with this today: California Republicans meet in Burlingame to ponder their relevence… The sub should be, “Same agenda as last year…” The Chronicle story about the Convention will not help California Republicans much: “…a growing number of state Republicans are falling in love with Santorum, who is out of step with most Californians on abortion, contraception and same-sex marriage…” We wonder if Santorum would approve of a bunch of older white dudes falling in love with him… We hope they don’t do any online research…

Speaking of same agenda as last year, the San Carlos Mayor Andy Klein talked about his ideas for the coming year during that City’s State of the City Address… budget struggles… Oh, and he’d like to have San Carlos be a charter city

To the coast, where Pacifica Riptide is hearing that Jim Vreeland is resigning from the City CouncilRiptide has an idea of who should replace him.

Daily Fetch 2.23.12: Who runs Milpitas? Chuck Reed’s office…

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Good morning…

It is a good morning indeed if you are Lew Wolff (or Don Gagliardi). His (their?) Earthquakes soccer stadium got approved last night at the San Jose Planning Commission. One stadium down, one more to go…

Imagine a huge development project in downtown Palo Alto getting approved… and if you can imagine it, the Lytton Gateway folks can make it so (with a little help from the Palo Alto Planning and Transportation Commission…)

Someone is paying attention to politics in Milpitas… San Jose Inside. It turns out that two of the more prominent players there are also prominent players in the San Jose Mayor’s office: Vic Ajlouny and Armando Gomez. And the two can’t stand each other apparently…

Daily Fetch 2.23.12: Love that dirty water…

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

We know it is a short week, but shouldn’t it be Friday already?

If there is one thing that folks in the County hate it is traffic… if there is another, it is Stanford causing that traffic. So when the study that looks at Stanford building a satellite campus in Redwood City says that things could get trafficky, expect people to flip right out

We always love these headlines: Don’t panic over cloudy water, officials doing testing… Yes, because nothing is more reassuring than cloudy water.
