Daily Fetch 1.31.11: Just another manic Monday…

Monday, January 31st, 2011

What started as just a dude shining a laser at a Sheriff’s Department helicopter has turned into a possible 3-strikes case and could send the accused, Christopher Rubiales, to prison for 25 years to life… Making this the new DA Jeff Rosen’s first major decision…
To other public safety/crime news…
On Saturday, the Mayor handed over the budget decisions to San Jose residents who tried their hands at solving San Jose’s (mock) budget mess.  Heck, why not?  Residents are probably just as informed as some Councilmembers…
Speaking of budget mess… The Bay Citizen has a story saying, “For some cities, redevelopment has been an all-purpose piggy bank- the Gov is trying to end that gravy train…” That all-purpose piggy bank may be going away in San Jose, with or without the reGovernor’s desires…
Mark Purdy at the Merc gives us all a column that we should clip and send to the anti-San Jose Giants’ front office and to Bud Selig too:   San Francisco Giants’ territorial claim to South Bay becoming impossible to defend
Here’s some news that popped up over the weekend in the Merc:  Lunardi s Markets to possibly take over Cosentino’s.  While Lunardi’s ain’t Cosentino’s, Lunardi’s also ain’t Walmart…
It was Sunday yesterday, which means it was Internal Affairs’ day at the Merc. And this is the big story that will get folks on the 18th floor buzzing…  Dan Fenton may have landed a new gig, consulting for Taxi San Jose. Is he bound by revolving door rules because he used to be on San Jose’s payroll (sort of)? We’ll see…
You may remember a while back a cell tower was proposed for a residential property in Los Altos.  Actually, it was the fifth cell tower on one family’s property and the neighbors were super-pissed.  (It is Los Altos after all.)  Well, the appeals process has been exhausted, and the cell tower will go up, as the County Board of Supervisors has the final word… for now
To the blogs…
San Jose Metblogs is still (still?) down.  A local blog hasn’t had this much server trouble since San Jose Revealed’s servers were destroyed permenently…
Jim Griffith at Dweeb.org has a rundown of Sunnyvale’s 2011 Study and Budget Workshop… which even Griffith has to acknowledge is a very, very long read
San Jose Inside did a mean thing??” asks James at Mission City Lantern… Actually, the accusation of a mean thing was apparently made deep in the bowels of the comment section, where mean things are often written on Inside

Daily Fetch 1.7.11: Facebook and Cosentino’s, two ends of the economic spectrum…

Friday, January 7th, 2011

As if there weren’t enough 20-something millionaires (billionaires?) running around Silicon Valley in their Teslas… Facebook’s IPO may happen in early 2012
From one end of the economy to the other:  Cosentino’s will close in February.  This is a big blow to the South Bay community.  Screw you Safeway! (and Target and Walmart and…!)
For those of you (conspiracy theorists) who think that the Gillmors run Santa Clara, today’s news will reinforce that feeling… Lisa Gillmor was elected to fill an open seat for the next two years.  It won’t surprise you that Mission City Lantern has something to say on the topic (in a good way).
In Mountain View, a headhunter has been hired to find a new City Manager following Kevin Duggan’s retirement announcement.
On Sunnyvale City Councildweeb Jim Griffith’s blog, he describes how Sunnyvale sets priorities for the year… including taking input at the supermarket

Have a good weekend folks.  Perhaps by Monday we’ll know if Jim Harbaugh is staying at Stanford…
