Daily Fetch 1.28.11: Chris Moore, Removing the “Interim”

Friday, January 28th, 2011

The big story of the day is that the City of San Jose has chosen its new Police Chief, or at least the City Manager’s selection for the new Police Chief has been made public… Anthony Batts is staying in Oakland and interim Chief Chris Moore will (almost certainly) be San Jose’s next non-interim Chief.  Some reaction:  San Jose City Manager Deb Figone is pleased with her decision. Former San Jose Police Chief (and all around media darling) Joseph McNamara thinks it is a great choice.  Scott Herhold at the Merc calls the choice “a victory for common sense“… The Editorial Board at the Merc says, “New San Jose chief must show he heard public concerns.”  Speaking of public concerns:  community activists and critics of the San Jose Police Department aren’t so pleased.  The most vocal critic of the Department, Raj Jayadev, said that the City missed an historic opportunity for change.  This is even important enough (apparently) that the Chronicle is even covering it.  In Oakland, the feeling is that Anthony Batts, while not moving to San Jose, may not be long for Oakland either… kind of like the A’s…
The San Jose Police Officers’ Association blog, Protect San Jose, has been quiet on the build up to the new Chief’s announcement, and they are again today going into their regularly scheduled programming, Watch Commander’s Report
One of the first issues Chris Moore will deal with as interim, and then as chief, is the officer-involved shooting from earlier this week.  The County Sheriff’s office released the name of the man that was fatally shot:  Oazi Do.
Here’s a weird story:  The Palo Alto Dispatch Center received 566 “phantom” calls over five hours a few weeks back.  They think it was all a technological snafu from a Verizon Wireless phone rather than a prankster.
In real estate news… Facebook has bought land near the Sun Microsystems (former) campus is Menlo Park.  That’s good news for Menlo Park, bad news for Palo Alto, Facebook’s current home.  We wonder who will play Facebook’s real estate agent in Social Network II…
To the blogs…
There is another chapter in the domain name saga between local political consultants Roland Bonilla & Ryan Ford and Jay Rosenthal.  San Jose Inside has the details of a lawsuit Ford & Bonilla filed against Rosenthal.
San Jose Metblogs is still (still?) down
Dweeb.org (the blog of Sunnyvale Councilmember Jim Griffith) pays tribute to a Sunnyvale Public Safety Officer who died in the line of duty on this date in 1962.
A blog that is making its way into our repertoire is Carl Guardino’s CEO Show Blog… this week’s posting?:  Caltrain.
That’s it for today, for now.  On Twitter and Facebook we update mid-day, so check it out…
